Developing the knowledge of the ceramic sector at a national level and strengthen the competitiveness of the industrial, handmade and artistic ceramics for the foreign market are the main goals of Mater Ceramica, the New Centre for the Italian Ceramic Culture, a project wanted and established by Confindustria Ceramica, first experience of this kind in Italy.

The union and sharing of studies and viewpoints devoted to this sector, coming from the industry, handicraft, scientific research, museums and art, is the starting point of the project that, for two years, will engage the  MIC‐ International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza (for the cultural part: art and museums), the AiCC Association of Italian Ceramic Towns (for the handicraft) and the CCB Center Ceramic in Bologna (for the technical-scientific research).

The first step is devoted to the mapping of the national ceramic production in order to create a data-base available for the firms, also useful to stimulate competitiveness, analyze critical situations and opportunities of the market. The data-base will concern the categories: Industries; Ceramic towns; Ceramic museums and libraries; Institutions of research and innovation; Institute for education and training; handicraft workers and artists.

The second step is focused on innovation through activities of scientific and technological studies, which are finalized to deepen the possibilities of the ceramic materials (also through the updating and the training of specialized staff), to improve quality and sustainability of the products.

The third and last step concerns the promotion of the project results and studies through the creation of an internet portal for ceramics where all the data collected during the research will be available. They will be implemented by the publication of the Historical and geographic Atlas of Italian ceramics, a critical study on the industrial ceramic production inside the Italian design history; a touristic guide of the towns of ceramic production; a glossary of ceramic terminologies.

The validity of the project has been granted by the MISE (Italian ministry of the economical development) that offered an important economical contribution to the program
