| PLATE
WITH WIDE CAVETTO AND FULL RIM

Diameter: 29,5
cm.
Majolica
Faenza, mid-15th century.
Provenance: acquisition (1935)
Condition: fragmentary, and extensively repaired with antiquarian
type restoration.
The term «antiquarian-type» restoration here is used to indicate
a conservative kind of operation tending to completely repair the
object, and replace any missing pieces, so that it is once again
whole. The repairs are then covered over by a paint retouch job
which must so resemble the decoration and colors of the original
as to render the restored portion indistinguishable from the original.
Inv. no. A. B. 4458.
At the center,
the bust of a youth with a large cap inside a reserved zone with
white background. The remaining space is taken up by moresque-style
plant motifs unfurled in volutes and by rosettes. The rim contains
a wide band with palmettes.
