Playing with the Art

Project

The project of the laboratory "Playing with Art" started in 1978, following a request by the Director of the International Museum of Ceramics Gian Carlo Bojani to the artist Bruno Munari and the group "Playing with Art" in Milan. The experimental teaching activity, carried on by a group of students of the Institute for Ceramic Art in Faenza, began in November 1979. This experience methodically evolved, ending in 1982. The present layout, considered preparatory for the knowledge of the ceramic techniques and of the method “playing with art”, is due to the work of Ivana Anconelli , teacher who coordinated the laboratory under the supervision of Bruno Munari and Gian Carlo Bojani, from 1982 to 1997. Since 1997 Maria Grazia Gordini, teacher at the pre-school, and Dario Valli, ceramist and restorer, have been managing the laboratory following the twenty-year experience handed on in Faenza.

Aims

The aim of the laboratory is to introduce children to come in contact with the objects of the Museum through the manipulation of the clay; it helps them to know the different ceramic techniques. The Munari method applied to ceramics tries to develop creativity, freedom and knowledge: the child plays and at the same time learns the language of the shapes, of the colours, of the lines and volumes. When the training ends the children visit the Museum and try to find works similar to the ones they made; they can also have a free experience in the exhibition halls feeling at home and considering this place a place in their town where they can walk and look around.

Activities

The principal activity of the laboratory is devoted to the school classes and to the groups that follow the teaching proposal of the Museum. For twenty years, generally in June or November, refresher courses have been arranged for teachers and other people interested in these activities. They are devoted to the Munari method “playing with art”, to the knowledge of graphic and pictorial materials and to art, handicraft and visual communication.
These activities are explained in the ten publications “Quaderni del Laboratorio Giocare con l’Arte”.
The laboratory participates in exhibitions, meetings and workshop devoted to museum
