Special Argillà 2024: Hiroki Kiyokawa, kintsugi demonstration and workshop

Loading Events

Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese ceramic recovery technique that can also be applied to porcelain, glass, and lacquerware. As part of Argillà 2024 on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Hiroki Kiyokawa of Japan, the undisputed master of this traditional Japanese technique, holds a public demonstration at MIC in Faenza. Kintsugi is a technique that originated from the Tea Ceremony culture some 500 years ago. Through the use of gold or another natural material it breathes new life into broken vessels by emphasizing the damaged parts. The technique is derived from the teachings of Eastern philosophy that everything that han a form is destined to break and that breakage, not an unfavorable event, but creates the possibility of rebuilding the future. Kiyokawa has been involved in kintsugi restoration for 50 years, handing down the traditional techniques established in the Edo period. He has restored temples and shrines, architecture, Buddhist statues, ceramics, lacquered objects, antique furniture and antiques. He has been teaching kintsugi classes in Kyoto and Tokyo since 2015 with the aim of spreading this restoration technique and passing on the tradition. From 2017 to the present, he has been mentioned in many international media, such as the BBC, which has led to wide publicity of his activities in Japan and abroad, and in 2022 he performed at the Vatican in Italy at the invitation of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He founded “Kiyokawa Lacquerware Arts” in July 2019 and established the NPO “ROLE,” for which he serves as representative director, in June 2021. Through his company and NPO activities, he is actively involved in creating successors and preserving traditional culture. Reservations are required to participate in the demonstration by August 29, 2024.
