Dish with “San Girolamo”

Deruta, first half 19th century XVI, glazed maiolica

Deepening

The work looks like the typical Deruta “pump plate”, with two holes made in the foot to hang it on the wall. The precise decorative function of these works, which furnished the homes of the time, was enhanced by the precious metallic lustre decoration. The large plate depicts in the centre a penitent Saint Jerome, recognizable by his classic attributes of the lion and the cross, while beating his chest with a stone. The decoration is completed by the characteristic brim divided into compartments with floral motifs and acanthus leaves.
