Inkwell – The Judgement of Paris

Faenza, late fifteenth century, maiolica

Deepening

The small sculpture represents the “Judgement of Paris”. The five characters are arranged around a column-shaped fountain (ink holder) and a hexagonal basin (tool holder). Leaning with one arm against the basin one recognizes Paris, slumbering and in knightly armor. Standing behind him is Mercury, identifiable by his typical ancient Greek headdress, while on the opposite side of the fountain are Venus, Juno and Minerva, the goddesses of myth dressed in sumptuous Renaissance garb. The desk service bears on the rim the date “1505 adj 6 de junij”.
