Nursery service, Ferniani factory
Faenza, last quarter cent. 18th century, maiolica
Deepening
The introduction in 1777 of the “third-fire” firing in the Ferniani Factory allowed the Faentine maiolicato elaborate, in the new purple red and gold colours, a cultured decorative theme called “a rovine”. This decoration was stimulated by the general cultural and artistic renewal following the excavations of the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. maiolica was thus embellished with imaginary views of ancient architectural ruins, as in the “puerpera” (or “stuffed”) service presented here, intended for women in labour and composed of various tableware.
