Pair of goals (triumphs) and fretwork plate

Faenza, c. 1636, maiolica

Deepening

The sumptuous pump ensemble consists of two mete (or triumphs) and an openwork plate. The goals are modelled as openwork pyramids supported by four lions, while on the smooth part of the base is painted the joint coat of arms of the wealthy Ghisilardi and Spada families. The same coat of arms is also depicted on the plate with the articulated fretwork. These sought-after creations decorated the tables of the richest families, the “whites of Faenza” in fact enjoyed great fortune and were requested by noble patrons eager to celebrate themselves through elegant majolica, renamed throughout Europe with the term “faïence”.
