Upstand

Laterza, end of sec. XVII, maiolica

Deepening

Freely inspired by a graphic version of Annibale Carracci’s famous painting “Il Mangiafagioli”, the riser shows a man sitting at a table, eagerly eating pasta from a bowl he is holding. Behind the diner are two putti intent on fighting with ladles and forks. The iconography of the putti is completely original both for the refined aristocratic hair and for the curious cloaks they wear. The whole scene is proposed through the peculiar figurative language of Puglia, characterized by a spatial conception devoid of volumetric and perspective effects, so as to make the image a sort of crowded allegory of the capital vice of gluttony.
