An international conference dedicated to Xanto Avelli is scheduled to be held in Urbino, in the Winter Garden Hall of the Ducal Palace, on Friday, October 27 (9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.) included in the project “Xanto Avelli, a world artist,” an initiative promoted by the Fondazione Rovigo Cultura, supported among others also by the MIC of Faenza, with the aim of enhancing the figure of the famous Renaissance potter born in Rovigo and known worldwide.
Born at the beginning of the 16th century, Xanto Avelli, worked as a maiolica painter, from at least 1530, in Urbino. He is one of the most prolific maiolica painters of his time. Several hundred pieces are preserved in private and public collections in Italy (Museo Nazionale in Florence, Museo del Castello in Milan, Museo Correr in Venice, Museo Civico in Bologna, Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza), Europe (Louvre Museum in Paris, Victoria and Albert Museum in London), and America (Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland).
The conference is attended by some of the leading experts in research on Renaissance historiated maiolica.
